Basketball Sputters, Ends Season at 8-14

Humboldt, Iowa – Humboldt held one lead yesterday against the top-ranked Boone Toreadors in their Class 3A District 3 semifinal.

It was 3-0 Humboldt not thirty seconds into the game, for the next thirty-one and a half minutes, however, it was all Boone.

The Toreadors went on two large first half runs to break the game wide open in their 68-42 win over the Wildcats.

Humboldt had difficulties containing Boone’s leading scorer, Ethan Lewis, who finished with a game-high twenty points, including canning three three’s.

Humboldt showed flashes of life down the second quarter stretch, cutting Boone’s lead to thirteen and at one point eleven, but wouldn’t get any closer.

The Wildcats surged in the second quarter thanks the play of the young duo of Jamison Heinz and Jack Arendt. Heinz showed fearlessness when attacking the Toreador bigs and while finishing around the rim proved tricky, Heinz found open players.

Arendt went to the free line on consecutive possessions, finishing with five hard earned points, but was an incredibly high-motor player in his minutes on the floor.

While Devon Clark hit a three to open the game he found it hard on the offensive end for most of the night being guarded by 6’5′ guard John Herrick. Clark finished with 10 points.

In the end, the lack of size Humboldt had truly limited them on both sides of the floor. Humboldt graduates starters Ryan Courtney, Drew Thomas, and Devon Clark – returning Carlson and Owen Terwilliger, both sophomores.

Boone awaits Perry who defeated Gilbert in the first game of the evening. Boone is 2-0 versus Perry this season picking up 57-42 and 50-49 wins.
