Humboldt, Iowa – The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved the county budget for fiscal year 2017-18 at their meeting yesterday morning.
The Board set the tax rates per $1,000 of taxable valuation at 5.9637 for Urban Areas and 9.9137 for Rural Areas.
Chairman Rick Pedersen explained: “there wasn’t any big increases.”
“I know some of the valuations are going up [although], but we are trying to keep our levy the same” Pederson explained.
“I know the bottom dollar will go up but also, property values have increased in Humboldt County.”
Some of the bigger increases stem from a January 12th compensation board meeting that set the pay wage increases for county officials.
Both the County Attorney and County Sheriff received pay increases of 5% bringing the attorney’s salary to $93,017.88 and the sheriff’s to $76,758.04.
“Some of the larger increases did come from the increase in compensation for county officials. That’s the hard part to deal with”, explained Pedersen, “you’re stuck with [the salaries].”
The Board unanimously the Budget as well as the pay increases which was titled as Resolution #2017-5.
