Gidel Sets School Record; Finishes 14th at Drake

Des Moines – For Humboldt freshman Bryce Gidel, running in Des Moines at Drake University is just another notch on her belt.

The freshman was a top qualifier for state in cross country earlier this fall and  even ran in some regional cross country meets.

Simply put, for her freshman year Gidel has ran in races some would have hoped to participate in by their senior years.

It wasn’t all easy for Gidel, however.

She was a late – and lucky –  add to the meet because of another competitor dropping out of the 3000m run.

She was then seeded 21st out of 21 other competitors, something her head coach Dean Clasen believed actually helped her out.

“We had a plan for he to go out pretty conservatively, but I think she surprised” said Clasen.

“If you are coming in tagged as the 21st entrant, there is not a whole lot of pressure. Everything about was just a win-win situation” he explained.

Clasen said that if Gidel would have went out and finished 21st, the experience as a freshman would no doubt make her stronger in the long run, but Gidel was able to run her fastest time of the season en route to a 14th place finish, Thursday evening.

With a time of 10:34:27, Gidel is the new school record holder passing Samantha Larson’s old record.

Gidel, remember, is just a freshman.

Clasen said he was pleased with how Gidel handled the situation and big-stage in Des Moines.

“It’s a different atmosphere running there,” he said, “they take the top-21 and not by class, she runs with the very best in the state.”

Gidel is expected to compete for multiple NCC titles on Thursday in the North Central Conference meet.
