Cats Drop Back-to-Back NCC Matches, Algona Stuns Humboldt

Humboldt, Iowa — When Humboldt and Algona meet up — in any sport — it’s usually going to be a good contest.

The Algona football team held off Humboldt’s late rally earlier this year, the basketball teams met up in spirited contests last season, the baseball and softball teams have engaged in some gorgeous games, too.

It’s a rivalry — and those wins hardly ever come easy.

Take last night as prime example.

The stellar Humboldt Wildcat volleyball team — who came in 20-4, battled tested, and very talented — fell in four sets to the Bulldogs 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-27, 24-26).

Of course, it’s worth mentioning Algona Head Coach Shelly Terhark is one of the best to do it. Her young Bulldog team nearly upset the Cats in the playoffs last season, pushing Humboldt to five sets.

This year, that young team looks to be primed to play spoiler again in late October.

Sophomore Abigail Holmes led Algona’s attack with a game-high 17 kills. Humboldt seemingly could not find a time to pull away yesterday.

For each run Humboldt had, Algona countered, then Humboldt, then Algona, in three of four sets it was a back and forth. It wasn’t until late in the second set were Humboldt pulled away.

Senior Bri Jensen served with the game on the line for Humboldt in the fourth set with Humboldt trailing 22-24. Jensen rallied Humboldt even, only to see Algona finish with the last two points.

Humboldt is hoping their poor run of play is a mere aberration rather than the end of season standard. The Cats drew Pocahontas in the first round of the playoffs — October 18th.

They will travel to Mason City this weekend for a tournament before finishing up their regular season schedule next week Thursday on the road at Fort Dodge Saint Edmond.
