Storm Lake Man Charged in Humboldt County Accident

Humboldt, Iowa — A Storm Lake man has been charged with three separate counts of vehicle related crimes following a December 2nd accident.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office says 33-year-old Otoniel Ruiz, of Storm Lake was the lone vehicle in the accident.

The report states Ruiz was westbound on Highway 3 east of Florida Avenue. Ruiz drove onto the north shoulder and tried to bring it back onto the roadway. Ruiz then over-corrected and the vehicle slid as it went back onto the the north shoulder again.

Ruiz’s vehicle rolled twice and ended on it’s wheels in the north ditch. Beer cars were found at the crash scene.

According to the reports, the driver appeared intoxicated and admitted to having drank alcohol prior to the accident. Deputy Ryan Stein was unable to acquire a BAC test due to another emergency call at that time.

Ruiz was transported to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital where he received staples to his head. It was stated that Ruiz had no recollection of how the accident happened.

He was charged with Failure to Maintain Control of Vehicle, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, and Driving While License was Suspended.
