Carlson, Heinz Lead Boys to Friday Win

Humboldt, Iowa —  When they needed a big shot towards the end of the game, he was there. When they started the first quarter hot: he ignited it.

Make no bones about it, Calvin Carlson entered the new year focused, and he delivered Humboldt a signature win to start the second half of their season.

Head Coach Jason Hoag tipped me off before the game that Carlson would have a big night.

“He hasn’t been missing” Hoag said of his junior sniper, “I think we scrimmaged the other night and he was probably 10-for-12 or something like that from three.”

Carlson poured in 21 points, including two from the line to seal the win for Humboldt, 66-62, over Iowa Falls-Alden. The Wildcats improved to 3-6 on the season.

With Carlson, sophomore Jamison Heinz also dazzled, scoring 16 points on an efficient 11 shots. When the two can feed off each other, they are tough stop. Heinz can get to the rim with ease, which can lead to open jumpers for Humboldt’s shooters.

Junior Owen Terwilliger probably played his best game of the season nearly registering a double-double. “The Sheriff” finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

If Terwilliger can continue that level of play, Humboldt might be able to make a second half run.

They will look to stay hot tomorrow (Tuesday) when they play host to South Central Calhoun at 7:45 p.m.
