Atlantic, Iowa — It was yet another strong outing for the Humboldt Wildcat wrestling program, something that has been a theme through this season.

Joey Busse placed first, Hunter Egdorf and Justin Jones second, as the Wildcats took third as a team Saturday in the talented Dyer Tournament.

In his championship round match, Busse squared off with Killyan Green of Ankeny. Busse defeated Ivan Kruse (Bondurant-Farrar), Chance Koch (Tipton), and Blake Liebe (Sergeant Bluff-Luton) on his way to the finals.

Busse won by decision, 9-3, over Green.

Hunter Egdorf, who has taken a major jump in his senior season, was ousted by Cole Rathjen of Ankeny in the championship of the 195 pound weight class, 3-2 by decision. He did rack up two falls in his earlier matches over Tristan Navrkal (SB-L) and Hunter McMann (Red Oak).

Justin Jones pinned his first two opponents: Liam Mahoney of Red Oak and Romello Gray of Ankeny, to advance to the championship round in 285.

There with the elite John McConkey of Atlantic, who came in 88-6. Jones battled hard, but it was McConkey who would win by decision, 5-3.

McConkey placed second at state last year in the 285 pound weight class.

Levi Naeve and Jacob Nilles placed third in the 160 and 138 pound weight classes respectively.

Head Coach Chad Beaman was unavailable for comment.
