Humboldt, Iowa — The Humboldt Wildcat wrestling team will have two wrestlers in Webster City this weekend.

Senior Brandon Johnson (220) was a sectional champion and junior Joey Busse (145) was the a runner-up both cementing their stake this weekend.

For Busse, this is usual territory — he was state qualifier last year, but likely stares down the barrel of highly touted Tanner Abbas (38-3) of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, yet again.

Busse and Abbas have squared off three times this season with Busse losing all three, his most recent loss to Abbas was Saturday, via fall in under one minute.

Abbas earned the #1 seed in the 145 district bracket, with Busse taking on Josh Borg (20-20) of Ballard who won at Ballard’s sectional.

Johnson’s (30-12) first place finish Saturday was astronomically large, as he avoids Webster City brute James Cherry (29-4) in the first round this weekend.

Cherry, the winner at 220 from the Ballard sectional, is currently ranked #7 in the state and will open against Xavier Nichols of Southeast Valley. Johnson will battle Josh Detar (26-13) of Ballard, an opponent who had previously defeated in a quadrangular at Ballard, earlier this season.

Wrestling will get underway at Webster City High School beginning at noon, Saturday.

Myself and Brad Duffy will be on the call for all of Johnson and Busse’s matches.
