Cold, Wintry Weather, Long Road Trips Haven’t Derailed Wildcat Boys Track

Humboldt, Iowa — It’s been a weird track season. You can ask head boys track coach Greg Wickett, he’ll probably agree.

The Wildcat boys track team, who had to travel south to I-35 High School for their first meet, Ida Grove for the second, will once again take to the road as they travel to Emmetsburg tonight for a road invite.

Ultimately, despite the cold weather, the Wildcats have been able to produce some darn good number in the early going.

A lot of that is thanks to Denny Pedersen who has been a revelation this year.

Denny’s really taken off” Wickett said in an interview Saturday.

He’s been one of our leaders, we’ve got a good crew right now.”

Wickett has had to improvise so-to-speak, with the poor weather in the onset of the 2018 season.

We’ve ran relays around the fish pond, we’ve moved snow for workouts, we’ve been running on gravel” he laughed. “Just have to stay fresh.”

So, road warriors they’ve become. Out of necessity almost.

They’ll be on the road the remainder of the season with just four meets standing between them and conference which is set for May 3rd — a little over a week away.

We’ve got conference [coming up] and we’ve only raced twice, I think that’s unprecedented in itself.”

Field events will begin tonight at Emmetsburg at 5:00 p.m.
