Placeholder in 17-18 Budget for New Athletic Center

Humboldt, Iowa- City Administrator Travis Goedken announced yesterday that, barring council approval, there is a placeholder in the new budget for a new recreation center in Humboldt.

With gym space being tight, there could be an immediate need for more gym space explained Goedken.

The athletic center would feature a basketball court, indoor track, weight equipment, locker rooms and offices.

One possibility is working in conjunction with Heinz Sports Complex, whom the council has already had preliminary talks with.

Another possibility is teaming up with West River,  but that could propose some drag-backs.

If the new athletic center is added to the north of West River, the city would need clearance and approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

If the city decided to add-on to the south, they could perhaps be in the flood plain.

Talks are expected to continue at tonight’s budget session with Clayton Vorland.
