Senior Center Could Have Expanding Programs, City Says

Humboldt, Iowa –  The Humboldt City Council announced Monday they will be taking over the lease for the Humboldt Senior Center effective immediately.

The lease, which has just a few years left on it – according to City Administrator Travis Goedken – is over 35 years old.

The Senior Center approached the City about the lease which inspired Goedken and the council to examine the building to determine it’s condition.

“It is a good, sound structure” Goedken said via teleconference.

“There’s no real significant issues by any means, we just want to make sure it is still available for seniors to use” he said.

Perhaps more intriguing, was Goedken mentioning the city may look to add more programs to the senior center creating something that may mirror a community center, as well.

“We look forward to the possibility of expanding our rec program. to things that aren’t traditionally in our wheelhouse. Maybe we can get into ballroom dancing, square dancing or bingo” explained Goedken.

The senior center is located at 607 1st Street in downtown Humboldt.
