Webster City, Iowa — This isn’t the 2016 7-17 finishing Webster City Lynx. The Lynx overpowered Humboldt (10-5) to stay atop the North Central Conference, gashing the Wildcats to the tune of a 10-1 win last night in Webster City.
Senior Devon Clark started for Humboldt. The right-hander threw 77 pitches in his 3 2/3 innings, yielding six runs, yet only one of which was earned. Clark walked four and struck out three.
The Lynx held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th, before breaking the game open with a four run inning.
Senior left-fielder Riley Mishler of Webster City finished 2-for-2 and clubbed home four runs batted in. Only two Lynx starters finished hit-less.
Humboldt would claw back with one of their own in the 5th, coming on an Isaac Thurm RBI. The Lynx spoiled what was a tremendous night at the plate for Reese DeWinter.
The Wildcats third-baseman finished a perfect 3-for-3. DeWinter is 7-for his last-15, which has raised his average nearly 60 points. It’s a welcomed sign for head coach Jason Thurm, as DeWinter finished the 2016 season red-hot as well.
Webster City got a strong six innings from their senior starter Bryan Ferrell. Ferrell allowed six hits and one earned run, while walking one and striking out six.
Ferrell and fellow teammate Max Hackbarth have solidified Webster City having two top-end starters this season, which has allowed them to rebound from a rough 2016.
The two are a combined 7-0 on the season with an 0.95 ERA.
Humboldt will use the weekend to rest before heading to Fort Dodge Saint Edmond Monday, for a tilt with the Gaels.
