Humboldt, Iowa — Thanks to the generous donation from the Nielson family, Humboldt will be getting a new recreation center within the next 16 to 18 months. The recreation center will be build on Nielson land and once finished will be taken over by the City of Humboldt.

The project is set to be approximately 60,000 square feet.

“We couldn’t do anything close to this on our own, this was all made possible by the generosity of the Nielsen family” City Administrator Travis Goedken said following the city meeting Tuesday.

“Based on projections here it should be able to cash flow on its own, and result in no additions taxes to our residents” explained Goedken. He explained that the center should profit upwards of $31,000 per year.

The new recreation center will include a double basketball court, a four lane 200 meter track, weight room, cardio room, two racquetball courts, locker rooms, bleacher stands and some office space.

There is still a potential childcare center to be added for parents looking to work out at the new rec center, and then have an area for their children to be.

Once the current rec center project is finished, the West River Recreation Board decided their center will dissolve.
