Flu Season Been One of Iowa’s Worst in Years, State Health Officials Say

(KHBT) — State health officials believe that 2017-18 has been the worst flu season in the state since 2009.

The data comes from a release from the state health department.

The report indicated that over 150 people have died this flu season — from either the flu itself, or flu-related illnesses. State health officials consider “flu season” to begin in October.

Health officials say that this flu season — not even over yet — trumps the great 2009 flu outbreak, when the swine flu was prevalent.

Last year around this time, there had only been about 50 flu related deaths statewide.

Flu shots can still be had — it’s not too late — as even if you do contract the flu, the shot can help manage or weaken symptoms.
