Supervisors Table Animal Control Building Discussion

Dakota City, Iowa — Discussion and possible action on an Animal Control building in the county will have to wait. We reported Monday that answers could be in the cards, however sheriff Dean Kruger was unable to attend the meeting, Monday pushing the agenda item back.

The board, however, seemed pleased to be making in-roads on the matter.

Currently, the county rents from Denise Johnson — who’s property is west of town — which acts as the Animal Control building.

Merri Hanson, Humboldt County Animal Control Officer, explained at a prior meeting that the volume of animals at Johnson’s property fluctuates, but she said she has been adopting the animals out at a rapid pace. Hanson mentioned there had been people coming from all parts of the state to to adopt out of their “shelter.”

Earlier this winter, there was a committee commissioned to help discuss what avenue would be best for a new building, whether to build new or rent.

Johnson was originally looking to sell her property, however the price point was seemingly not interesting enough to the city or county to pursue.

Talks are expected to continue at future meetings between Hanson, Kruger and the board.
