Ogden, Iowa — “I just hope we win one game, Nate”  is a familiar phrase uttered by head softball coach Doug Van Pelt quite often — yesterday those hopes were realized, as the Humboldt Wildcat softball team secured win number on on the road at Ogden, 2-1.

The Wildcats got a great start from sophomore pitcher Ellie Jacobson. Jacobson worked a complete game, allowing three hits and one run, walking two and striking out thirteen Bulldogs.

Ogden got an equally strong start from their ace, Denali Loecker, but Humboldt’s bats were just a bit warmer.

The scoring got started in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Bulldog cleanup batter Ashton Boggess crushed her first home run of the season on a rise-ball that didn’t rise. It was the only ball Jacobson would want back yesterday, in an otherwise stellar outing.

Humboldt was able to claw one back to knot the game at one. That score would hold until the 5th inning when after an Addie Birdsell single and sacrifice bunt, Carlie Thompson roped a single to center-field scoring the go-ahead run.

Jacobson worked around a two-out walk in the 6th and then retired the side in order in the 7th to earn her first victory in 2018.

Humboldt is off until Wednesday when they’ll host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
