Humboldt, Iowa — You almost couldn’t believe your eyes.
Nine.
That was the number in the error column late last night at Wildcat Field.
Really, was it nine errors?
In fact, it was.
What’s even more out of the ordinary, is that Humboldt, now 10-13, is on pace for their first losing season since 2011.
Things were looking up just two weeks ago after a walk-off win over then conference leading Webster City. Humboldt played to a 4-2 record over the next week, but have seemingly imploded dropping three straight against Estherville Lincoln Central, Hampton-Dumont and Algona.
Algona boasts one of Class 3A’s top offenses, scoring over nine runs a night, and they lived up to their billing last night.
The Bulldogs used a five run first inning to set the tone and grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Centerfielder Trevor Bromann hit two home-runs and drove in five in the victory for Algona.
Humboldt scratched across a run in the bottom of the 3rd to cut the deficit to 8-2, but wouldn’t get any closer the remainder of the night.
Spencer Holmes earned the win for Algona, while Cade Witzke dropped his first decision.
Witzke is now 4-1 on the year.
Humboldt will try to lick their wounds and earn a victory tomorrow night as they welcome in the Cowboys of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
First pitch Friday is set for 7:30 p.m.
