Humboldt, Iowa — The Humboldt City Council discussed the possibility of city vagrancy ordinance at their meeting on Monday.

City Administrator Travis Goedken informed the council that he has received “quite a few calls on homeless individuals” at Lake Nokomis Shelter.

As of right now, the city does not have a vagrancy ordinance —  it’s not illegal to be homeless in Humboldt.

There has been some expression for the city to do more to move those individuals along. The city has contacted shelters and social services, Goedken said.

The only thing written into city code at this point, is that camping in city parks is illegal past 10:30 p.m. Goedken reached out to other cities and they too had said they had similar rules to Humboldt’s curfew-style park rule.

Councilman John Sleiter urged Goedken to continue monitoring and investigating the situation.

No official action was taken at the meeting.
