Wildcat Football Finds Groove in Road Win, Friday

Grimes, Iowa — The long-awaited search for an identity might be over the Humboldt Wildcat football team.

Senior tailback Tyler Vitzhum grinded out 120 yards on 24 carries, as the Wildcats were able to knock off Dallas Center-Grimes, 28-6 last Friday.

It was the Mustang’s homecoming, as well.

Humboldt jumped out to an early lead courtesy of senior quarterback Joey Busse — who looked much more confident Friday — who connected with Caiden Baker, on a 27-yard scoring strike, giving Humboldt a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcat defense was once again the story of the game helping vault Humboldt to an early advantage, forcing back to back three-and-outs to start the game.

Following the second straight punt for the Mustang offense, Wildcat return man Jamison Heinz bounced outside, got a block and was sprung loose for a 62-yard kick off return. It was once again a situation that rendered me speechless: Heinz is so absurdly faster than everyone else on the field, it’s unfair.

Humboldt took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break where once again, Jamison Heinz provided the homecoming theatrics.

Heinz took the opening kick-off of half number two 88-yards to paydirt to grow Humboldt’s lead to 21-0.

The Wildcats would tack on another late score with a play-action pass touchdown from Busse to Lucas Volf, from seven yards out.

Humboldt’s defense held Dallas Center to just 174 yards of offense and recorded three sacks.

The Wildcats are now 2-4, 1-1 and will travel to Webster City to battle the Lynx this Friday.

Kick-off is ls slated for 7:30 p.m.
