With temperatures on the rise, so are scam phone calls.
Bess Ellenson, a spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau (BBB) says scammers like to take advantage of people in the spring season. She recommends people “get everything that is supposed to be done in writing,” referring to any yard work, tree-trimming, and clean-up work.
If you’ve been the victim of a phone scam, the Iowa Attorney General’s office recommends subscribing to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov.
Another popular phone scam this time of year in Iowa is someone saying they’re from MidAmerican energy and that you’re behind on your bill. MidAmerican spokesman Geoff Greenwood says that’s just not how they operate.
Greenwood says MidAmerican will send multiple warnings through e-mail or notices on your actual bill.
