Humboldt, Iowa — With Memorial Day swiftly approaching, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging Iowans to buckle up this weekend as part of a “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

The campaign will take place May 20th to June 2nd according to a press release issued by the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau in conjunction with the Humboldt Police Department.

The release also stated there is a common misconception about pick-up trucks; drivers thinking their large vehicles will protect them better than other vehicles in the event of a crash. Well, 59% of pick-up truck occupants killed in 2017 were not buckled; compared to 42% of car occupants.

Location is another misconception – there were actually more passenger vehicles fatalities in rural areas compared to urban locations in 2017. Of those fatalities, nearly half killed in rural areas were not wearing their seat belts.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and the Humboldt Police Department want to remind drivers and passengers to “buckle up every trip, every time!”
