Des Moines, IA — Former Iowa governor Terry Brandstand (R) testified in court and pleaded against the accusations of former Workers Comp commissioner Christopher Godfrey who is suing the state because he believes he was pressured to resign from his position in 2011 because of his sexual orientation.

Brandstand was quoted saying that he didn’t know Godfrey was gay when working for him during his administration. The former governor also said he was unaware that claims had gone down under Godfrey. Godfrey filed a wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuit in 2012 after Brandstand asked Godfrey to resign then cut his pay when he refused to do so according to O. Kay Henderson of Radio Iowa.

Brandstand was questioned for around six hours, and the case will continue questioning this week with more witnesses scheduled to take the stand.
