Iowa School Buses Could Require Seat Belts Soon

Des Moines, IA — A pretty big proposal will soon go up for a vote in the Des Moines school system which would require all school buses to have seat belts.

The biggest concern would be the adjustment for kids to go from no seat belts to having them getting them to adjust is what Robin Witt says who is the district’s transportation safety specialist is.

She says it’s also going to be a learning curve if the motion passes because it will always be a struggle to make sure all kids wear their seat belt during from start to finish on the bus ride.

The State Board of Education has preliminary approval to have schools order their new school buses with seat belts in place. A hearing for the proposal will be later this month.
