Des Moines, IA — Gas prices in Iowa are expected to stay low for the holidays.

Rose White, of AAA-Iowa, says the national average gas price is $2.55 per gallon, down five cents in the past month. In Iowa, the average is currently at $2.34. While lower than the national average, it is still 24-cents higher than last year’s average around this time.

White says roughly 104.5-million travelers will reach their destination by car, another 6.9-million will fly “and the remaining 3.8-million will use other modes of transportation, such as bus, rail and ship.”

White says air travel volume should be the highest its been since 2003, an increase of nearly 25% from last year. White says “people love to travel to see friends and family during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, especially when times are good.”
