Humboldt, IA – The Humboldt City Council is making adjustments to the curbs in the improvement projects along 12th Avenue North and 10th Street South.
During the most recent meeting of the council they were approached by Kevin Heiter who represented Jet Company Trailers. His discussions were not an official agenda item but were concerns about the improvements to the curb the city has planned near the company’s property.
The project is slated to have a six inch curb put into place to help avoid overflow and flooding on areas beyond the street. Heiter says he and the company are concern with the curb height and driveway size. He says they are afraid their employees driving through regularly would hit the curb and cause damages and asked council to consider a four inch sloping curb instead.
Heiter recognizes that with the smaller curbs even their parking lot floods after a lot of rain. He says they would rather deal with flooding over the higher curbs. A second advantage of the six inch curbs is also they provide easier repairs in the future. The council says this is another reason why they would have to consider staying with the six inch curbs.
After discussions that included input from ISG Construction Consultant Nick Fredrickson the council decided they would put in a change order to the contractor Reding Gravel and Excavating. This change order would increase the width of the driveway slightly but the curb height would remain six feet but be a ramped instead of a standard curb.
