Humboldt, IA – The Moffit Animal Shelter in Humboldt is welcoming in their new director as they make the move towards operating at full time.
First announced through the Moffit Animal Shelter Facebook page Miranda Peterson has been named the new director for the shelter. She talks with KHBT about the position and her passion for animals.
Peterson says that working for the shelter is one of her ideal jobs. “I’m actually very excited” she says. She refers to is as he one of her “dream jobs” since she’s always enjoyed working with animals. Previously Peterson has worked as a teacher. She says that kids and animals have always been some of her “favorite things in life.” The director feels lucky to have been able to work with both in her life now.
Peterson says that she has experience caring for animals ever sense her family moved out to the country. She says that it become very well known to her that owners have a tendency to dump animals and she took it upon herself to rescue some. Caring for humans furry friends has always been something she loves to do.
“I don’t know I just have always loved animals” she says. She’s also had the passion to take care of them. This rings especially true for those who are in need of “extra care.” This includes those that are sick or have behavioral problem. “Those have always been just the ones I gravitate towards” Peterson says.
Just getting her feet wet in the position Peterson says that the position right now is not exactly where it will be during normal time. She says that at this point it’s just a lot of paper work and cleaning. “Especially with COVID going on” the cleaning is top priority for the shelter. “I don’t know what normal will look like since I’m starting in the middle of COVID” Peterson admits. One thing she knows she’ll be doing is helping establish their policies. This way the shelter is ready for when they open their doors to walk-in traffic instead of operating just by appointment.
Peterson does know that part of her job will be organizing the volunteers but the shelter is not ready for that part yet. She does say they have a list of pretty good individuals when the time comes. The director has also taken time to meet with other area shelters to discuss partnership and working together when the need arises.
Peterson says she is really excited to being this journey as the Moffit Animal Shelter’s director. She says she’s really appreciative of the community for welcoming her and the shelter in and their generosity to helping them get started.
The Moffit Animal Shelter is currently open and operating by appointment at this time. They post the dogs and cats they have for adoption through their Facebook. To confirm animal availability and make an adoption appointment call the shelter at (515)604-6242.
