Humboldt County, IA – The Humboldt Soil and Water Conservation district is naming their 2020 county conservation award winners.
Announced via a release three awards were given to Humboldt County residence for their efforts in conservation practices.
The Windbreak Award was given to Dan and Diane Dix for planting their “living snow fence” along their driveway southeast of Dakota City back in 2012. It serves as a grand entrance and shelter to their farms driveway.
The Wildlife Habitat Award was given to Doug and Lorrie Bacon who initiated a number of conservation efforts into their farm south of Humboldt, including CRP windbreak and sizable habitat buffer along the West Fork Des Moines River. Thanks to continued care this area is now a good place to find pheasants, deer and turkeys.
The Conservation Farm of the Year Award was given to Mark Thompson and his family in southern Humboldt County. They have used strip tillage for corn and no-till for soybeans for many years. He also stated using cover crops in 2013 and has spoken for several groups giving the farmer’s perspective on cover crops and soil health.
Each year the Humboldt Soil and Water Conservation District recognizes local leaders who have made outstanding contributions towards solid conservation, water quality and improvements to rural landscape. They are proud to announce this year’s recipients.
