Humboldt baseball tops Algona Garrigan

Algona, IA – On Thursday, July 8, Humboldt baseball beat Bishop Garrigan (Algona) on the road by a score of 9-6.

Humboldt started the game with two runs scoring in the top of the first inning. Cade Witzke got a one out single before Levi Newton hit a two run home run.

Bishop Garrigan responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Their first four batters got on base and all came around to score. They added one more run in the bottom of the second before a scoreless third inning.

Bishop Garrigan led 5-2 after three before Humboldt took the lead back. In the top of the fourth inning the Wildcats sent all nine batters to bat as they scored five runs. Each team added one run in the fifth inning to make it an 8-6 ball game after five.

With no runs scoring in the sixth inning, Humboldt was able to score one run in the top of the seventh. Jayden Gargano led it off with a walk after coming in as a relief pitcher in the sixth inning and his brother, Ty, scored as the courtesy runner. Jayden Gargano got the save by not allowing a base runner in the seventh (or sixth) inning.

Colby Clarken was the starting pitcher for Humboldt. He went five innings and gave up nine hits, three earned runs, two walks and a hit batter. He struck out three batters in the win.

Bishop Garrigan’s starting pitcher was Jacob Leerar. He went four and two-thirds innings and gave up eight hits, eight runs and four walks in the loss. Nathan Merron pitched the last two and one-third innings and gave up one run a walk and hit batter.

Humboldt’s Newton went 1-2 in his at bats with the two RBIs on the home run. Clarken hit 2-4 with a double and an RBI.

Humboldt’s record is now 20-8 this season and they have won their last three contests. Levi Netwon was named the Player of the Game by KHBT as part of the broadcast coverage.

Humboldt’s next game is Friday, July 9, on the road against Spencer who is 7-12 this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
