Humboldt, IA -For the first time since 2014, the Humboldt Wildcats boys basketball team is off to the state tournament in Des Moines after the Wildcats defeated the Spencer Tigers 63-55 in the 3A Substate 1 Final on Monday night. Humboldt fell behind 8-0 in the 1st quarter and trailed 17-5 after the 1st but Humboldt outscored Spencer by 4 in the 2nd frame to take a 27-25 lead at the half. The 3rd quarter was back and forth but Humboldt took a one point lead going into the 44th quarter at 37-36. The 4th quarter was a tight one as well but Trevor Jacobson kept hitting big shots like this to extend the Humboldt lead.
Ben Kuehnast got a big layup late as well to give the Cats some breathing room.
Here is how the final sequence sounded on KHBT.
Trevor Jacobson, Caden Matson, and Will Orness each finished with 14 points unofficially. Here’s Head Coach Jason Thurm on the win.
Next up for the Wildcats is the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on March 8.
