Wildcats lose OT thriller in State Tournament

DES MOINES, IA – A magical season ended last night for the Humboldt Wildcats boys basketball program in the 3A State Quarterfinals of the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, as the Wildcats dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Davenport Assumption by a score of 69-65.

Humboldt raced to an early lead 22-13 after one quarter of play after knocking down a plethora of three pointers in the first half and led 35-27 at halftime.

The 3rd quarter was mostly even but Humboldt was able to extend the lead to 49-37 going into the 4th quarter. Davenport Assumption responded in the 4th outscoring the Wildcats by 12 points in the 4th to send it into overtime, despite their two best players Noah Mack and Ivan Prug fouling out with about a minute and a half left in the 4th. Caden Matson fouled out for Humboldt as well late in the 4th.

In overtime, Humboldt took the early lead on a Jake Heier layup but turnovers and timely shots by the Knights, was the difference.

Will Orness finished the game with a game high 17 points,  Ben Kuehnast had 13,   Trevor Jacobson had 12, Josh Thurm and Caden Matson each had 9 and Jake Heier had 5. Noah Mack had 17 to lead the Knights.

Coach Thurm reflected on the season that was for the Wildcats.

Humboldt’s season ended at 21-4, Davenport Assumption will play Central Dewitt in the Semifinalson Thursday.
