Humboldt Wildcats Girls’ Soccer upset by Hampton-Dumont-CAL 2-0 in 1A-Region 3 First Round

Humboldt, IA – The Humboldt Wildcats Girls’ Soccer season came to an abrupt end tonight with a 2-0 loss to the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs at the Humboldt High School Soccer Field in the 1A-Region 3 First Round. With the loss, the Wildcats end the 2022 season with a record of 10-8.

The game was scoreless until the 19:00 mark in the first half when the Bulldogs’ Irlanda Tangarife (Sr.) found the back of the net, beating Wildcats’ goalkeeper Maria Elizondo (Sr.) to give Hampton-Dumont-CAL a 1-0 lead. The match would remain at 1-0 until there was 6:00 left in regulation, when the Bulldogs’ Zoe Erdman (So.) drove one past Elizondo for the dagger to make it 2-0 Bulldogs.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL, who entered the game with a 1-13 record, shut out the Wildcats on their home turf in front of a stunned crowd. The Wildcats had many opportunities in the match, but Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Gina Schmit (Jr.) remained perfect on save opportunities, stopping all 20 Humboldt shots on goal. Elizondo faced seven shots on goal, stopping five of them.

The Bulldogs will move on to the 1A-Region 3 Second Round at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School to face the GHV Cardinals (11-3) on Tuesday, May 24. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m.
