Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service has placed central Iowa under a freeze warning overnight starting at 1:00 a.m. and lasting until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

The NWS states there will be sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees expected with impacts including frost and the freezing conditions to kill sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. They warn to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
