Des Moines, IA – A Child Passenger Safety Certification Course starts May 8 for residents in Humboldt County.

The course is part of Humboldt County’s participation in the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s ‘High Five Rural Traffic Safety Project’. The project focuses on occupant protection and involves a three-tier approach including enforcement, engineering, and education with the goal of building a safer community.

Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. The same is true for children being properly restrained in vehicles. While most parents and caregivers are confident their child’s car seat is properly installed, almost half are installed incorrectly.

The course provides attendees with the opportunity to apply basic technical skills and knowledge to the correct installation and use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts. It is meant to enable candidates to be a resource in their community.

The course is free. The certification fee is paid for through funding from the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. A Car Seat Checkup event is part of the certification process. Members of the community are encouraged to come by the Humboldt Fire Department and have installation of their car seat or booster seat checked by a technician. This will be held May 31 from 2-4PM.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau works with city, county, state, and local organizations to develop and implement strategies to reduce deaths and injuries on Iowa’s roadways using federally funded grants.
