Humboldt, IA – A Humboldt woman was charged last Wednesday after a lengthy investigation into an incident that occurred almost a year ago.
21-year-old Kayden Goodell turned herself in to the Humboldt Law Enforcement Center on Wednesday of last week at 8:00 a.m. on the charge of Child Endangerment with a Serious Injury, a Class C Felony. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on August 29 of last year, when Humboldt County Memorial Hospital EMS responded to an at-home daycare located at 1205 8th St. S for an unresponsive four-month-old baby.
The daycare provider Goodell had reported that there were no unusual circumstances that would explain the infant’s sudden condition, and the on-scene law enforcement personnel did not observe any indication a crime had occurred. On August 31 of last year, an investigator with the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and reported a non-accidental trauma, also known as shaken baby syndrome, that had caused the infant to suffer a seizure.
On Sept. 2 of last year, the case had been turned over to Humboldt Police Department from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office. The Humboldt Police Department was assisted by Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in an investigation that included interviews with the daycare provider, victim’s family, and medical experts. The charge was officially filed on August 1 of this year with Goodell turning herself in the next morning where she was released from custody later that day on a $10,000 surety bond.
It had been reported that the victim baby in the incident is doing well and thriving.
