Humboldt claws back to score 28 unanswered points to beat Webster City 28-14

Humboldt, IA – After trailing Webster City 14-0 at halftime, Humboldt scored 28 unanswered points to defeat Webster City 28-14 and conclude district play undefeated with a win over the Lynx at Mason Maach Field Friday night.

Webster City would score on their opening possession with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Aiden Hrnicek to Jaxon Griffith to put the Lynx up 7-0 in the first quarter of play. The Lynx would add another score before halftime with a Cael Nixon one-yard rushing touchdown to give Webster City the 14-0 lead at the half.

The game was a tale of two halves for both teams as Humboldt came out firing, scoring a touchdown on their first drive of the half with quarterback Coen Matson finding Chase Flaherty. The next drive saw Webster City fumble the ball on their own side of the field with the fumble recovered by Humboldt’s Trey Al-Hameed. The Wildcats would add another score on a touchdown pass by Matson to Flaherty to tie the game at 14.

Humboldt would add two more scores with Matson finding Flaherty for a third time and connecting with Valley Davis. The touchdowns for Flaherty were four, 20, and 41 yards with Davis’ score at 18 yards.  Humboldt’s Jackson Flaherty intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter.

The win was Humboldt’s 37th all-time against Webster City, with the Lynx leading the series 66-37-4 in 107 meetings.

Humboldt wraps up the regular season 8-1 (5-0 3A-2) with Webster City at 3-6 (2-3 3A-2). The Wildcats are 3A-2 District Champions and will find out who they play in the postseason Saturday at 10:00 a.m. when brackets are released.
