Humboldt, IA – Perpetrators of one of the grandparents scams in Kossuth County have been identified and an arrest has been made.
In press release by the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Eddie Benitez Abreus of Miami, Florida; was arrested at a motel in Humboldt and charged with First Degree Theft, a Class C Felony. Abreus was transported to the Kossuth County jail.
A warrant has been issued for 28 year-old Carlos Garrido Guzman of Homestead, Florida; for First Degree Theft, a Class C Felony. Guzman is still at-large.
In this latest scam, the victim in Burt, IA was told that their grandchild needed a bond amount of $10,000, where a person came to the residence to collect the cash. Grandparent scams involve victims being contact that their grandchild needs bond money to be paid in order for them to be released from jail. The caller scamming the victim into believing the only way to get their loved one released from jail is by paying a cash bond to a bondsman that would stop by the victims house to collect the money.
The scams have been occurring in multiple counties around the state.
The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Humboldt Police Department and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
