Humboldt, IA – The parents of a student who was sexually abused by their middle school teacher are suing the Humboldt Community School District, alleging the district tried to conceal that their child was sexually abused.

The former middle school teacher, 32-year-old Samantha Meyer-Davis of Rutland, pled guilty in a Sioux City federal court in April 2025 to sexually exploiting a student between May 2022 and November 2023.

In the lawsuit filed on October 7, the parents claim the school knew about the abuse but did not inform them. Court documents also allege Superintendent Jim Murray told staff not to tell law enforcement or open a formal investigation. It also claims the district did not take action to prevent the abuse until after the state became involved.

A statement obtained by KHBT-FM after the lawsuit was filed by Murray and the district states, “The district has not yet been served with the lawsuit and cannot comment on pending litigation. However, student safety is always our highest priority.”

Last week, Meyer-Davis was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. She is set to go on trial in state court later this month on state charges of third-degree sexual abuse and sexual exploitation by a school employee.
