Humboldt basketball splits doubleheader with Algona

Humboldt, IA – Humboldt split a doubleheader of girls’ and boys’ basketball with Algona from Humboldt High School Tuesday night.

In the girls’ game, No. 13 (3A) Algona recorded a season series sweep of Humboldt with an 83-46 win behind a big night by Bella Jo Dunning with 26 points. Also in double figures were Kate Limbaugh with 17 points, Gabby Venteicher had 16, and Hayden McLaughlin recorded 14. Humboldt’s Ava Fischer led the team with 16 points. Jada VanDeWalle had a 13-point night and, Charlie Smith had 10.

With the loss, Humboldt falls to 9-11 (4-10 NCC) and heads to Newell-Fonda on Thursday. Algona won their 11th consecutive game to improve to 18-4 (13-1 NCC) and will next take on Southeast Valley in the 3A-7 First Round on Saturday in Algona.

In the boys’ game, Humboldt won the first game of the season series against Algona 66-54. Down by 10 with two minutes remaining in the first half and trailing by as much as 13, Humboldt took the lead for good over Algona in the final minute of the third quarter.

The Wildcats were paced by Valley Davis with 15 points, Jackson Flaherty and Chase Flaherty each with 12 points, and Chase Hansen with 10 points. Nathan Manske led Algona with 17 points, Jacob Burns had 15, and Jaxon Eischen had 11.

With the win, Humboldt improves to 12-7 (7-5 NCC) and will host Webster City on Friday. Algona fell t0 13-6 (6-5 NCC) and will head to Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday.
