Two teens arrested in armed robbery in Pocahontas Saturday

Pocahontas, IA – Two teenagers have been arrested in an alleged armed robbery that occured in Pocahontas on Saturday, March 21.

According to a press release from the Pocahontas Police Department, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Pocahontas County Communications Center received a report of a young male armed with a handgun who was threatening another individual in the 200 block of 1st Ave. SW in Pocahontas, across the street from the Pocahontas Elementary School near an apartment complex. The department said that school was not in session and there was no one at the school at the time of the incident.

A victim was located near the scene who stated he was robbed by two suspects and then assaulted with the subject pointing the handgun at him. After speaking with witnesses, officers identified the two suspects as a 16-year-old juvenile formerly of Rolfe now residing in Humboldt and 18-year-old Gideon Ayafa of Pocahontas. Ayafa is being held in Pocahontas County Jail with the 16-year-old held in juvenile detention in Cherokee.

Ayafa is being held on the charges of 1st Degree Robbery (Class B Felony) and 5th Degree Theft (simple misdmeanor). Bond for Ayafa is set at $25,300. The juvenile is being held on the charges of 1st Degree Robbery (Class B Felony), Going Armed with Intent (Class D Felony), Aggravated Assault (aggravated misdemeanor), 5th Degree Theft (simple misdemeanor). Bond is set at $37,300 for the juvenile.

The Pocahontas Police Department was assisted by the Pocahontas County Sheriff Office, the Laurens Police Department, and the Humboldt Police Department.
