City of Humboldt to launch automated garbage collection this September

Humboldt, IA – The City of Humboldt is preparing to roll out an automated garbage collection system beginning in September, a change city officials say will improve efficiency and increase safety for sanitation workers.

The new system is tentatively scheduled to begin in September 2026, pending the delivery and upfitting of a new automated garbage truck. The truck uses a mechanical arm to lift and empty specially designed garbage totes, allowing collection to be completed without the driver leaving the cab.

As part of the change, residential customers will receive either a 65-gallon or 95-gallon garbage tote, which will be delivered to homes in early September at no additional cost. Each tote will be assigned to a specific address using a unique serial number.

Monthly garbage and recycling rates will increase by $6, bringing the total monthly charge to $20. However, residents will no longer need to purchase garbage stickers, which city officials estimate typically cost about $5 per month.

Residents who already have garbage stickers or city garbage bags can continue using them if they have additional trash that doesn’t fit in the tote. Extra bagged trash should be placed next to the tote on collection day.

The city says recycling service will not change, and collection days will remain the same. However, garbage pickup will now begin at 7 a.m. instead of 6 a.m.

Residential customers who prefer to use a private garbage hauler may do so at their own expense. However, city garbage and landfill fees will still apply. Residents wishing to opt out of receiving a city tote must contact Humboldt City Hall by August 3, 2026.

Non-residential properties may choose whether to participate in the city’s garbage and recycling program. Businesses that wish to enroll or opt out must also notify City Hall by August 3.
