Residents across much of western, central and northern Iowa should prepare for several days of dangerous heat beginning this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from noon Saturday through noon Sunday, with heat index values expected to reach 105 degrees or higher.
Forecasters have also issued an Extreme Heat Watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening, when heat index values could climb to 110 degrees or higher, creating potentially life-threatening conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
The prolonged combination of high temperatures and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions and those working or exercising outside.
The National Weather Service urges residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and check on relatives, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to the extreme heat.
Anyone who must be outdoors is encouraged to take frequent breaks in the shade, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
