Humboldt, IA – The Humboldt City Council discussed a potential replacement of the aging fuel pump at Humboldt Municipal Airport during its latest meeting, citing ongoing reliability issues that have left some pilots unable to refuel.
Airport Manager Fletcher Satern told the council the current fuel dispenser has become increasingly unreliable despite multiple repair attempts. He said several pilots have recently been unable to purchase fuel after landing at the airport, forcing them to seek fuel elsewhere.
A replacement mechanical fuel pump is estimated to cost approximately $20,600, but no funding is currently available in the airport budget. Council members discussed several possible ways to pay for the project, including increasing airport fuel prices, raising monthly hangar rental fees, seeking donations through the airport’s annual fly-in, or utilizing short-term financing. No action was taken, with staff expected to return with additional funding recommendations.
The council also received a utility department update highlighting several completed maintenance projects at the city’s water and wastewater facilities. Among the work completed were repairs to water plant equipment, annual generator maintenance, wastewater system improvements, leak detection efforts, and required notification letters mailed to customers with galvanized water service lines. Despite several unexpected maintenance expenses, the utility department finished the fiscal year under budget.
City Clerk Amy Zeman also updated the council on Humboldt’s transition to automated garbage collection. Nearly 2,000 letters are being mailed to residents explaining the new garbage tote program and allowing customers to choose between two container sizes. The city also plans to provide additional guidance on proper cart placement ahead of the new collection system.
Council members also received encouraging news in the search for Humboldt’s next city administrator. Interim City Administrator Dan Gifford provided an update from the city’s recruitment consultant, stating that several strong applications have already been received for the position.
The council also briefly discussed growing concerns surrounding electric bicycles after learning about new regulations adopted in New Jersey. Members agreed any similar rules in Iowa would likely need to come through state legislation.
The next regular meeting of the Humboldt City Council is scheduled for Monday, August 3, at 5:30 p.m.
