Humboldt, IA – A Humboldt mother and son came away with top honors during Saturday’s Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair.
Dr. Aubrey Cordray of Humboldt Vet Clinic and her son, Hayes, of Humboldt were named Grand Champion Showman with their steer, Comet.
The Governor’s Charity Steer Show featured 25 sponsored steers, with each steer paired with a youth exhibitor and a celebrity.
The event also marked Governor Kim Reynolds’ final appearance in the show as governor. Reynolds teamed up with Kayle Englin of Orange City and his steer, Norm, and the group was named the Judge’s Grand Champion by judge Will Taylor.
The annual event raised more than $572,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. The money benefits Ronald McDonald Houses in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City, which have served more than 55,000 families from all 99 Iowa counties.
This year’s fundraising brings the total raised by the Governor’s Charity Steer Show since it began in 1983 to more than six-point-five million dollars.
The People’s Choice Award went to gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn and youth exhibitor Madeline Olson of Vinton.
