Humboldt and Twin Rivers to study possible school district reorganization

Humboldt, IA – The Humboldt and Twin Rivers Community School District’s boards are expected to consider a joint resolution in the coming days that would begin a formal study of the possibility of reorganizing the two school districts into one district.

Humboldt & Twin Rivers Community Schools Superintendent Ryan Fedders said in a press release Friday that approving the resolution would not mean the districts have decided to reorganize. Instead, the resolution would allow both districts to examine what a potential reorganization could look like, including the logistics, financial impact, opportunities and challenges.

The primary reason for beginning the discussion is declining enrollment at Twin Rivers. Compared with last school year, Twin Rivers has lost 12 students, representing approximately 25 percent of the district’s total elementary enrollment. There are currently 25 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through fifth grade at Twin Rivers. That number is projected to decline again next school year.

Over the coming months, the two districts would gather information and work through questions about the potential impact of reorganization on students, staff, families and the Humboldt and Twin Rivers communities.

The districts say they will continue to provide updates to their communities as the study moves forward.

No decision has been made to reorganize the two school districts. The proposed resolution would begin the process of studying whether reorganization would be feasible and what it could mean for both districts.
