Des Moines, Iowa — Iowa is one of several states considering raising the age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.
Iowa Senator Chris Cournoyer says that high school is where a lot of addiction starts; she wants to make sure it is not in Iowa high schools and raising the age to 21 is the “first step in addressing that.”
Some pharmacies such as Walgreens and Rite-Aid have already raised the buying age in their stores, effective in the next few months.
The bill currently being proposed would cover vaping products and electronic cigarettes.
Iowa lawmakers are hopeful the bill will reach Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk in the next month.
