Rutland, IA – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig stopped through Humboldt County Wednesday afternoon at West River Meats in Rutland as part of his 99 county tour.

Naig is highlighting the choose Iowa Program, whose vision is to connect consumers to Iowa produce and food products and expand markets for Iowa farmers.

Choose Iowa provides consumers a choice in purchasing food items that originate as an agricultural commodity produced on Iowa farms. The brand promotes foods, beverages and other agricultural products that are grown, raised or made within Iowa. Foods must meet or exceed minimum criteria to wear the Choose Iowa logo on their package or label.

Don Thul, the owner of West River Meats, discussed the current market for beef along with costs and the importance of local businesses.

Naig also spoke about the recent USDA proposed cuts and what the state is looking at doing for supplementing services that may be impacted such as the Farm Service Agency and Rural Development programs, and likely the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which helps low-income families purchase food.

The visit and subsequent condensed tour of the facility wrapped up with a photo op in the locker.
