Des Moines, IA — Governor Kim Reynolds (R-IA) has announced in order to bring awareness to the dangers of texting and driving to this week to be “End Distracted Driving” week.

The Department of Transportation has 17 different categories for distracted driving and phones are far and away the leading culprit. Law enforcement has issued over 300 tickets for distracted driving since January 1st.

According to Sergeant Nathan Ludwig, the biggest myth drivers believe is that they can read their message or email at a stoplight. Ludwig says you have to be off the travel portion of the road and at a complete stop before you can access your phone.

Eighteen states have laws which prohibit drivers from using their smart phone while driving and Governor Reynolds has said that that option seems like the natural next step for Iowa to take.
