Higher Temperature, Higher Chance of Tornadoes

It’s officially tornado season in Iowa.

But at the time of this broadcast, there has not been one single twister reported in the state.

Meteorologist Chad Hahn at the National Weather Service says peak months for tornadoes are April, May, and June. So why haven’t we seen any storms? Well, Hahn says despite the warmer temperatures recently, for the most part it has been a much cooler tornado season than in previous years.

He says there will be thunderstorms after the weather continues to heat up, but likely nothing too rough. He says it’s important for Iowans to not let their guard down. “It’ll likely go from zero to 60, so we need to battle the complacency bug and be ready for severe weather when it does strike.”

Last year, there were 69 tornadoes reported in the state of Iowa; 2014 had the most of recent years with 88.
