Iowa Hospitals Now Able to Put Caregivers on Patient Medical Records

Des Moines, IA — A new law is in effect in Iowa.

Starting today, July 1st, hospitals are required to give patients the option of naming a caregiver upon admittance. AARP advocacy director Anthony Carroll says family caregivers “represent the majority of long-term services and support.” He says even if a person goes to the hospital with someone they don’t consider a caregiver, they can be recorded as such on the patient’s medical record.

Before the patient is sent home, the caregiver is notified and there will be a discussion about the caregiver’s abilities and limitations. Carroll says it’s an opportunity to receive instructions on any medical care needed before the patient leaves the hospital.
