Des Moines, IA – The Governor of Iowa suspending some of the graduation requirement of for the class of 2020.

Education Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education Heather Doe says on Friday, April 10, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation that waives certain graduation requirement for the class of 2020 in the state of Iowa. Doe says that this applies to those who are on track to graduate this spring.

The Governor’s action suspends laws “requiring curriculum standards and completion of specific units of credit for completion of a high school program of study, to the extent such provisions would hinder Iowa school districts in assisting the Iowa high school graduating class of 2020 in completing a course of study during this disaster emergency.” Doe also clarifies by saying this is for districts who are participating in some form of continue learning.

Regardless of if a school is doing voluntary or required continue learning, this order by Reynolds will let high school student graduate this spring even if they haven’t completed all their credit hours or required course as long as they were on track to graduate before the COVID-19 emergency. Doe says this is not a free pass to those who would not have qualified before the pandemic.

At this time Gov. Reynolds still plans to allow the reopening of schools on May 1 but will give an update on the matter by the end of the week.
